Amman - For the second year in a row, Central Electricity Generating Company (CEGCO) - Aqaba Thermal Power Station was awarded the Health, Safety and Environment Excellence Award for the year 2014. Granted by the Social Security Corporation (SSC) on an annual basis, the Award seeks to foster competition between establishments in the sector for the generation, transport and distribution of electricity, encouraging increased commitment to occupational safety and health standards in accordance with relevant legislation.
During the recently-held award ceremony, CEGCO Executive Director of Operations and Maintenance, Eng. Ali Rawashdeh, was awarded an honorary shield as well as a certificate of appreciation. Conducted in the presence of SSC Director General, H.E. Nadia Rawabdeh, representing H.E. Dr. Nidal Qatamine, SSC Chairman and Minister of Labor, the award ceremony was attended by Aqaba Thermal Power Plant Director, Eng. Muwaffaq Alawneh, manager of its Occupational Safety and Health Department, as well a number of economic, labor, trade union and media representatives.
On the occasion, CEGCO Acting CEO, Nadeem Rizvi, stated that the Company's coming first and winning the award despite intense competition from several other institutions is a genuine indication of its positive safety and health standards. He added that CEGCO is a firm believer in the importance of providing the highest occupational safety and health standards to its human resources, as its employees represent the basic foundation upon which it depends to achieve its strategic goals and to increase its production rates while maintaining top quality.
Rizvi went on to praise the efforts undertaken by the SSC to not only raise awareness among institutions operating in the energy sector and beyond of the importance of adhering to safety and health requirements, but also to encourage healthy competition in their implementation according to the highest standards applied worldwide. This positive step will lead to the provision of safe, healthy work environments, capable of attracting local talent and reducing work-related injuries and occupational accidents, he said.
During the award ceremony, Rizvi also emphasized that every worker has the right to an ideal, safe work environment free of environmental and health hazards, which does not pose any potential long-term risks to his health. He added that, as is CEGCO's policy, it is the establishment's responsibility to look into any potential dangers and to develop proactive and preventative solutions to any issues that may arise.
