Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong and its local Co-organiser The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, are extending an invitation to Bahraini students, aged between 16 and 18, to take part in the Cathay Pacific International Wilderness Experience Programme 2005. The nine-day ecological course will take place from 26 July 2005 until 5 August 2005 at the Entabeni Game Reserve in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This year marks the 11th Anniversary of the programme and 50 international students from Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, New Zealand, Bahrain, Pakistan and South Africa will be invited to take part.
Successful applicants from schools in Bahrain will be flown by Cathay Pacific to the wilderness in South Africa where they will be guided by a team of highly qualified Educational Officers to experience nature through hikes, camping trips and wildlife observation. They will also share each other's cultural heritage through role-play and group discussion, as well as introducing their own traditional songs and dances.
"As an international airline, Cathay Pacific, is committed to the community and is especially focused on youth education and environmental protection. This is a wonderful opportunity for two Bahraini students, and Cathay Pacific is honoured to be able to give them this unique chance to experience the diversity of African Culture," commented Kothandath Mohandas, Marketing Manager for Cathay Pacific in Bahrain.
Cathay Pacific will pay for the cost of air tickets, course fees, accommodation, meals, visa fees and ground transportation in South Africa leaving the students to pay only a nominal amount towards insurance and pre-departure formalities..
Since its inception in 1991, the wilderness programme has seen over 450 students taking part in this nature experience. The Entabeni Game Reserve consists of over 10,000 hectares of natural scenery and vegetation. Participants will get up close and personal to a wide variety of wild-and plant-life, including the 'Big Five' (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard) as well as more than 80 species of mammals and 380 species of birds.
Schools in Bahrain have been approached with the opportunity to take part in the programme, and any Bahraini student between the ages of 16 and 18 will be considered. An essay of 500 words in English, stating why they should be selected to go is the qualification requirement.
