'Mind Mondays' Focus on Depression Treatment, Anxiety Disorders

Dubai, November 21, 2004 - Belhoul European Hospital (BEH) announced in September the launch of its new interactive community program, 'Mind Mondays', providing psychology lectures led by renowned Austrian psychiatric specialist Dr. (Mrs.) Bahar Celen M.D., free to the community every Monday.

Vienna-based Dr. Celen is in Dubai to deliver the programme over four months at the BEH, focusing on three key areas of mental health: Depression treatment for men, women and children, (ii) Psychological aspects of women's reproductive and sexual health, and (iii) Anxiety disorders and treatment.

Depression is considered the most common of psychological illnesses, with a prevalence rate of 15% in the general population. The lectures aim to inform people and create awareness about this common disease that can afflict anyone at any age and which, without treatment, may have serious consequences.

A general lecture, repeated at intervals over the four months, will cover definition, symptoms, causes, different forms, consequences and treatment options of depression. Dr Celen will deal with the different manifestations of depression in women, men, children and adolescents, as well as ways to prevent the illness.

The two-part lecture on women's reproductive health addresses issues such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, depression during pregnancy, anxiety during pregnancy, postpartum depression and menopause. The session also focuses on treatment options for Mind-Body Infertility, gynaecological cancers and treatments including hysterectomy.

The second part of this women-only lecture looks at female sexual disorders, those conditions not caused by physical problems but by psychological factors. Dr Celen will cover the different forms of the illness and highlight their psycho-therapeutic treatment options.

Another focus of the lecture series is anxiety disorders, a group of psychological conditions where the principle symptom is extreme and prolonged anxiety to the point where it interferes with a person's professional, social and private life. This chronic and debilitating disorder has physical symptoms and is common not only in adults but in children and teenagers, although particularly so in women. Dr Celen will speak on Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder, detailing the treatment options for each.

The free sessions will be conducted every Monday of the week over the next four months as follows:
