Work on BD1.2 Billion Development Ahead of Schedule

Bahrain - Land reclamation progress for one of the biggest mixed-use residential urban developments ever undertaken by the private sector in Bahrain, Diyar Al Muharraq, has been announced today as ahead of schedule. The management team of Bahrain's new city - located off the northern shores of Muharraq - has announced its completion of an impressive 70% reclamation of the development's initial 6 square kilometres.

This remarkable progress has been achieved due to precision planned activities on the part of Diyar Al Muharraq as lead developer, and the hard work of the various contractors involved in the project. It is also testament to Diyar Al Muharraq's use of only the most advanced dredging and reclamation methods, which are also the most efficient in terms of completion time.

Mr. Aaref Hejres, CEO of Diyar Al Muharraq, said: "This recent achievement brings us ever closer to achieving our dream of building a city of the future in the present. The sheer scale of Diyar Al Muharraq - 12 square kilometres in all - means that every aspect requires extremely detailed planning and execution. Our strategy is always to follow international best practice; so much so, that we are confident of keeping up the pace of reclamation, and indeed, all aspects of the project."

The development will eventually house over 100,000 people in around 30,000 dwellings. These will be gradually released, with the first facilities ready for use in 2010. Diyar Al Muharraq's unique pricing structure and selection of freehold properties makes it accessible to buyers from various income levels who will enjoy living in a fully self-contained city with a range of amenities, many also available for all the people of Bahrain to enjoy.

Hejres added: "The overall objective of Diyar Al Muharraq as a development is to be all-inclusive and for many people to benefit, including investors, developers, homeowners, businesses and the general public. Our long-term strategy also includes a plan to support the Ministry of Housing's social housing programme. As the master developer, our role is to make sure that all of our stakeholders are satisfied and that their expectations are fulfilled. So far, we are doing an excellent job in keeping our part of the bargain."

The masterplan maps out a self-contained city with many accessible, landscaped public spaces, incorporating around 40 kilometres of waterfront which includes sandy beaches and a marina. This will be among the largest publicly accessible waterfront in the Kingdom. The development also includes numerous community spaces and facilities, abundant landscaping, a number of international 5-star hotels and a large shopping mall with extensive parking, business district and light logistic and support area.
