Innovative software solutions for laboratory information management will be among the cutting-edge technologies to be unveiled at the 12th Arab Lab and Instrumentation Show that will be held from February 9 to 12, 2004 at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre. The show will also offer a preview of software solutions under development in the research and development centres of global lab technology providers.

“The inroads of Information Technology in strategic applications for lab management have facilitated the management of the vast amounts of data that is accumulated in the course of daily operations,” said Anselm Godinho, Managing Director, International Conferences and Exhibitions, the organisers of the Arab Lab and Instrumentation Show. “Over the years, we have witnessed at the Arab Lab and Instrumentation Show the development of this segment of lab technology. Software for lab management is not a new area, but the increasing complexity of software solutions and the speed with which development and implementation have taken place have practically revolutionised laboratory technology.”

“Lab software solutions have now gone beyond being simple data management solutions for busy laboratories. Increasingly the market is witnessing the entry of software solutions that are capable of automating the entire set of lab procedures, from testing of samples, recording and sorting through data, to making the data easily accessible for future reference,” said Godinho.

STARLIMS Corporation, a leading USA based software developer in the L.i.M.S. (Laboratory Information Management Systems) industry, will be showcasing StarLIMS at the Arab lab and Instrumentation Show. StarLIMS is a full-featured, flexible, multilingual laboratory information management system that provides complete traceability without compromising process versatility. The software solution is of great significance to the complex laboratory requirements of organisations in the public health, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, forensics, food and beverages, environmental and chemical industries.

“In the manufacturing sector, regulatory systems require examination of manufacturing components such as raw materials, production intermediates and finished goods, together with meticulous records of every action and result. Customers routinely insist that manufacturers keep auditable schedules and thorough documentation as a condition of doing business,” said Godinho. “On the other hand, in the medical field, management of data in areas such as blood banks can prove to be a crucial healthcare element. By providing a single platform for showcasing software solutions for all these sectors, the Arab Lab and Instrumentation Show will contribute to accelerating the technological sophistication of the lab industry in the Middle East.”

At the show, another exhibitor, DiaMed AG, a leading research and development centre in Switzerland, will feature Delphyn, a blood bank management system. Delphyn provides blood bank managers with a flexible and effective tool enabling them to fully computerize all activities, including donor management, patient management and blood components storage management.

DiaMed, which invests 10 per cent of its profits into research and development, is one of the global leaders in the field of diagnostic technology for Immunohaematology. At the Arab Lab and Instrumentation show, the company will also showcase Immunobase, a complete educational and reference software programme for immunohaematology, which includes comprehensive antibody databases.

In another related development, DiaMed has announced that it is in the process of developing software for two areas of lab technology. The first software solution named Maestro will incorporate all DiaMed instruments into one software solution, so the operator can operate any of the linked instruments with a single log-in. The second software solution is for DiaMed’s automated coagulation machines. This software allows the machines to have bi-directional access to host softwares. Trade visitors and exhibitors can access detailed information on these new solutions at the Arab Lab and Instrumentation Show.
