Murdoch University in Dubai's (MUiD) Annual Sir Walter Murdoch Memorial Lecture will be taking place on Sunday, 16th October at 1pm in the Zayed University Convention Centre. This year the event will be followed by a Graduation Celebration for Murdoch University in Dubai's first cohort of undergraduates.

The Lecture will be delivered by the Australian Ambassador to Qatar and the UAE, His Excellency, Doug Trappett, in the presence of Terry Budge, Chancellor of Murdoch University, Professor Gary Martin, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Murdoch University, Richard Duldig, Director Executive Education Centre Murdoch University, Ibrahim Jamel, Director of Operations, Education Cluster, TECOM Investments, Zafar Siddiqi, Chairman of Murdoch University and Rakesh Wahi, Vice Chairman of Murdoch University in Dubai, amongst others.

The five graduates commenced their education with MUiD in 2008. Four of them will be graduating from Murdoch University's School of Media Communication and Culture, and one from the Business School. MUiD's most recent postgraduate students will also be recognised at the event.

The celebration will conclude with a special dinner in the evening at Dubai's One & Only Royal Mirage Hotel.

About the Sir Walter Murdoch Memorial Lecture
Murdoch University annually invites a person of national or international standing to deliver its Memorial Lecture on a topic of his/her choice.

This will be the second second staging of the prestigious event at MUiD. The tradition for this thought-provoking lecture originates from the parent campus of Murdoch University in Perth.

Sir Walter Murdoch memorial lectures are topical and of significant interest. They provide a valuable forum for lecturers to express passionately held views. In this instance His Excellency, Doug Trappett's lecture is titled 'Celebrating Openness:  Dubai, the UAE, Australia, Murdoch University and the Class of 2011'. Last year, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research received an Honorary Doctorate and delivered Dubai's inaugural Sir Walter Murdoch Memorial Lecture at the ceremony.

Previous Memorial lecturers include the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission chairperson, Ms Lois O'Donaghue, the late Honourable John Tonkin, the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, Mr William Hutton, editor of The Observer, historian and Ex Murdoch University Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Bolton AO, CitWA, the Rt Hon Malcolm Fraser, AC CH, Laureate Professor Peter Doherty, AC, FAA, FRS and Baroness Professor Susan Greenfield CBE.
