Eng. Salah Amiri, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality, has honoured students from Dubai National School and Zayed University under the 'Ambassadors of Sustainability Programme' for their outstanding projects and suggestions in collecting and disposal of waste in the most sustainable way.
Maryam Khalid from Dubai National School presented her sustainable project on promoting the role of families in residential area in eco-friendly waste management, while Fatima Al Marzooqi from Zayed University spoke about her idea about affective collection of waste from vehicles.
Eng. Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director Waste Management Department at Dubai Municipality said 'Ambassadors of Sustainability is a unique program Dubai Municipality has been implementing collaborated with educational institutions aiming to train students who are interested to work for sustainable environment and waste management activities across the emirate.
'We train them on how to carry out lectures, workshops on various environmental topics as well as give them exclusive workshops on how to do sustainable waste management by reuse and recycle methods,' he said.
'According to him Dubai Municipality has separate training packages for secondary and higher secondary school students as well as for college students. After systematic trainings they will be qualified as Ambassador of Sustainability and will be deployed to conduct lectures, workshops and to carry out field visits to targeted institutions,' he explained.
Hamda Al-Murr, Head of sustainable waste management team at Dubai Municipality said civic body is now awarding qualified students with Ambassador of Sustainability certificates. We train them how to speak and debate on various environment matters. Those who proved ability in art works will be given training on how to convert waste items to useful objects.
According to Mr. Hussain Ghulam, Head of Administrative Support and Customers Section total 40 government and 20 private joined the initiative where the number of ambassadors reached 200 from these schools. Moreover, 2000 students benefited from the workshops organized on different occasions.
'A lot of new ideas and wonder full projects in sustainable waste management have been created by the effective participations of students such as tire park and organic compost originated from organic waste ...etc,' he added.
