Breaking news now available for GSM subscribers in Jordan

ALJAZEERA CHANNEL the first world class all-news 24 hour satellite channel that has become on par with internationally renowned providers of news and information, has tied up with Al Majaz Telecommunications and Fastlink telecommunications in Jordan to provide the latest news alerts and developments for GSM subscribers in Jordan through the AlJazeera Mobile Service.

AlJazeera Mobile was launched at the end of March with a very successful 2 weeks promotion, prior to the press conference held at the Grad Hyatt in Amman, Jordan. Fastlink, is the third Telecom Operator to offer the AlJazeera SMS service in the region after its initial launch in Qatar in October last year.

Available through SMS, "the service will provide subscribers with breaking news, political news, and the latest football updates, ensuring they are kept informed at all times about recent developments regionally and globally", said Mr. Hamad Al Nuaimi, Marketing Director of AlJazeera Channel at a press conference held to announce the launch of this path-breaking service. "We are happy to enter into this strategic partnership with Al Majaz and Fastlink", Mr. Nuaimi added.

Jordan is considered an excellent market for Aljazeera Mobile, charging a nominal fee for the latest and most comprehensive news coverage; the service is available to all Fastlink subscribers for "pay-per-alert" of 6 piasters (0.06JD).

Fastlink Marketing, International roaming &Mobile Data services Director, Bashar Arafeh expressed the Company's sincere efforts in seeking ways to keep its customers informed at all times, and with the simple click of a button on their cellular phones. "Fastlink has brought customers Al-Jazeerah, which, as news provider, has proven its competency, objectivity and credibility at both the regional and international levels," said Arafeh.

"Fastlink has always been pioneer in introducing the latest technologies known worldwide, such as WOW, MMS and GPRS and other innovative services such as e-banking, e-commerce as well as entertainment, games and competitions." Added Arafeh. After Qatar and the UAE, the AlJazeera Mobile Service has already been taken up in Egypt and now Jordan, and will soon extend to other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, with plans to cover mobile service networks worldwide.

"With its mobile service, AlJazeera Channel has moved into the Third Generation Mobile Services", said Mr. Hamad Al Nuaimi, Marketing Director of AlJazeera Channel. Considering the outstanding achievements of AlJazeera and its online service, Mr. Al Nuaimi said the SMS-based news service would serve the Arab world in catering to its specific interests.

AlJazeera, which launched its Arabic online news platform almost three years ago, had recently re-launched its online English language version both enjoying a combined average monthly rate of 20 million visitors and is today among the world's leading news portals.

"The news coverage of AlJazeera in the post September 11 attacks and the wars on Afghanistan and more recently Iraq, besides the continuing conflict in Palestine, has re-asserted AlJazeera position globally as a credible alternative source of news and information pertaining to Middle East issues, monitored by major news organizations, academics and observers alike", Mr. Al Nuaimi said.

Mr. Mohamed Al Obaidly, Chief Executive Officer, of Al Majaz Telecommunications, which specializes in telecommunications and information technology solutions, said that the unprecedented strategic cooperation on the AlJazeera Mobile constitutes a crucial point in harnessing the cutting edge of technological developments in the Arab region.

Mr. Obaidly pointed out that Al Majaz is currently engaged is establishing a specialized company based on international standards to provide the most advanced information technology services on mobile telephones. Its joint project with the satellite Channel, AlJazeera Mobile, will initiate its activities following a six-month joint-work period. Already highlighted at Cairo ICT 2004, was the introduction of AlJazeera Mobile services via WAP, through Vodafone live!, the first GSM operator to carry AlJazeera Mobile content via WAP. "We are very excited about future developments with this service in the region, and look forward to moving into Multi-media Messaging Service (MMS) and WAP." Said Mr. Al Obaidly.
