Intensive Care Unit has highly advanced facilities like negative-pressure isolation rooms for severely infected cases

Al Ain - Al Ain Hospital, owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA) and managed by Medical University of Vienna and VAMED, has expanded the capacity of its multi-disciplinary Intensive Care Unit.

With enhanced capacity and capabilities the new, 14 bedded unit is equipped to handle patients who are critically ill suffering from life threatening conditions - whether they are pediatric or adult, surgical cases, trauma related, internal medicine issues or other cases. All beds are fitted with state of the art equipment to monitor and treat critical patients.

"We serve as an important Emergency and Trauma Centre for the community of Al Ain and the expansion of the ICU enhances our capabilities to provide critical care," said Mr. George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital.

With emphasis on individual attention for patients, nursing is provided on a 1:1 basis so that each patient is looked after by an assigned nurse. The unit also has a specialist intensivist on-call 24 hours a day,  plus additional doctors during regular hours.

"This Intensive Care Unit has highly advanced facilities like negative-pressure isolation rooms for severely infected cases," emphasised Prof. Gerhard Schwab, Medical Director of Al Ain Hospital.

A negative pressure room intakes clean air from within a clean ward in the hospital and exhausts the air to the outside air, preventing cross contamination within the surrounding environment, reducing infections or spread of diseases.

The interdisciplinary ICU team which consists of specialist doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians and a pharmacist is headed by Prof. Eugen Adelsmayr, Head of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Institute.

"With the expansion we are now able to provide very highly skilled critical care. We are now able to treat all kinds of organ failures - heart and circulation, lungs, kidneys etc," explained Prof. Adelsmayr.

"We have hired accomplished specialists and put in place advanced medical equipment to provide complex services like plasma exchange (plasmapheresis) and renal-replacement therapy (hemofiltration) for up to three patients simultaneously.

The ICU, which is a department under Al Ain Hospital's Institute for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, treats around 400 patients per year.
