Muscat – Around 90 per cent of the COVID-19 related deaths in Oman are currently among unvaccinated people, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
A statement issued by MoH said COVID-19 vaccines reduce hospital admissions and mortality, in case of infections in those who have taken the jabs.
Around 94 per cent of the total target population in Oman, from the age of 12 years and above, have received at least one dose of vaccine. The percentage of those who received two doses is 87 per cent.
‘Around 90 per cent of the deaths were among unvaccinated people, while the death rate among vaccinated people was very low – 7.5 per cent of those who received one dose and 2.5 per cent of those who received two doses. The majority of deaths and inpatients belonged to groups that did not receive the vaccine and during the period prior to the commencement of the nationwide vaccination campaign,’ the statement said.
The percentage of unvaccinated COVID-19 inpatients in the sultanate has risen to 89 per cent, while the percentage of COVID-19 inpatients with a single dose does not exceed seven per cent and is 2.5 per cent among those vaccinated with two doses, the ministry statement said.
The ministry reiterated that it is possible to reduce the number of COVID-19 infections by taking the booster dose.
Several Omani doctors have confirmed that a stimulating dose can limit the spread of the virus. Dr Zakaria bin Yahya al Balushi, infectious diseases consultant at The Royal Hospital, tweeted, “The number of recorded cases of COVID-19 in many countries of the world began to decline following administration of the booster dose. The rate of vaccination in Oman with two doses is considered excellent, according to statistics published by the Ministry of Health.”
He added, “To know the effect of the vaccine, it is necessary to compare the number of inpatients and deaths in the current wave with those of the previous waves, and determine the percentage of decline.”
Dr Ibrahim al Busaidi, an infectious diseases consultant, said, “The third dose enhances protection against the disease, especially due to the decrease in the level of immunity after a period of time and in view of the emergence of the Omicron variant. According to the latest scientific studies, the third dose enhances protection by 35 to 75 per cent against Omicron.”
New COVID-19 passenger registration link
The Ministry of Health has issued a notice informing that it has changed the passenger registration link for the COVID-19 system from http://covid19.emushrif.om to http://travel. moh.gov.om
The new link will now be used by all passengers intending to travel to the sultanate.
