DOHA: Oxygen Park at Education City will host activities by Qatar Foundation (QF) after a soft opening on Tuesday -- the National Sport Day.

The unique park features 117 types of plants sprawled over more than 130,000 square metres. It has a covered walkway, running track, gardens, equestrian track and a sports pitch.

The Oxygen Park is expected to open officially in March and will initially be accessible only to students of Education City before being thrown open to the public, said QF officials during a media briefing on Thursday.

On National Sport Day, the park will offer pony rides organised by Al Shaqab, besides Crossfit, zumba, and boxercise classes, as well as a beach volleyball tournament.

These activities will be part of more than 60 events organised by Qatar Foundation on Tuesday to promote a healthy lifestyle and well being.

Under the theme of 'Unlock Your Inner Athlete', the activities demonstrate QF's commitment to shaping a healthy, sports-loving society, while inspiring people to make positive, long-lasting changes.

The annual 3km walkathon hosted by Sidra Medical and Research Center will be one of the highlights of QF's activities on the day.

Hamad bin Khalifa University's (HBKU) Student Center will also offer a slew of activities including bowling, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, football, traditional games, and group fitness classes. In addition, events for QF staff, those with special needs, and ladies will also be hosted at both venues.

Engineer Saad Al Muhannadi, President of Qatar Foundation, said, "This year's National Sport Day will be very exciting as we have a variety of activities that aim to engage the entire community. Qatar Foundation  gives priority to sports and well being, and National Sport Day is at the centre of our multifaceted, year-long plan which has been specially designed to foster an active and healthy society."

"We are committed to providing activities that cater to everyone, young and old, in order to spread awareness on the importance of well being, as well as prevent diseases through productive change. This is also an opportunity for us to show the hard work of our centres for the development of health care in Qatar," Al Muhannadi added.

Activities of QF on National Sport Day also focus on nutrition and healthy eating. Through the day, health education activities such as the Sahtak Awalan - Your Health First, will be organised, which is aimed at inspiring young people to make healthy lifestyle choices.

As part of the activity, young people will get the opportunity to blend their own smoothies using specially adapted bicycles.
