Life expectancy in Bahrain has increased by 27 years since 1978, it was revealed yesterday.

Health Ministry Under-Secretary Dr Waleed Al Manea said life expectancy in 1978 was 53 years, but it has now risen to 77.5 for men and 80 for women.

He was speaking at the Sixth Gulf Forum for Strategic Planning organised by Act Smart Consulting at The Grove Hotel and Conference Centre, Amwaj Islands.

The event, which ends today, is held under the patronage of Cabinet Affairs Minister Mohammed Al Mutawa and sees experts from Bahrain and across the region taking part.

Meanwhile, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry Municipalities Affairs Under-Secretary Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said the goal was to have green spaces of two metres for every person in Bahrain.

Forum secretary general Dr Fahad Al Shehabi said strategic development plans had to be outlined in co-ordination between all regional partners to achieve a comprehensive result.

He was speaking as UN Industrial Development Organisation Arab International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Investment programme co-ordinator Afif Barhoumi revealed that the Arab world needs an annual additional budget of $230 billion to achieve its set goals.
