Hariprasad Chaurasia, the undisputed king of the Bansuri, the North Indian Bamboo flute, will return to Dubai after a spell on August 25 at the Ductac. Chaurasia will be accompanied by two master percussionists — Satyajit Talwalkar on the Tabla and Giridhar Udupa on the Ghatam]. The trio, performing together for the first time, will create an improvised recital from start to finish with rhythms from the North and South of India.

Hailing from a family of wrestlers, Chaurasia is every bit the unconventional Indian musician. In his early years he trained in his family profession to please his father but eventually the passion for music took over and he started learning the flute at the age of 15. At 25, he and won the discipleship of one of India’s most reclusive classical purists, Annapurna Devi, and under her guidance his playing took on a new dimension. In a career spanning six decades, Chaurasia has not only collaborated with India’s greatest musicians including Shivkumar Sharma, Jasraj and Zakir Hussain but also international stars such as John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Ken Lauber and George Harrison. In partnership with Sharma, he also composed blockbuster hits for Bollywood films like Silsila, Lamhe, Chandni and Darr.

He’s also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India, and the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres award.

“Dubai is not new to me. And each time I come, I look forward to creating something new. This time I have two talented young percussionists accompanying me for a special performance which will be a blend of folk and classical music,” the 79-year-old said.

Tickets, starting at Dh75, are now on sale on platinumlist.net.
