Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned drivers about its zero-tolerance policy towards reckless drivers who endanger their lives and the lives of others on the roads.
The warning came after a driver was arrested for drifting his car and accidentally running over a passenger who fell from the same vehicle in the wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Hassan on Sunday.
In a statement, ROP said, “The South Al Sharqiyah Police Command has arrested the driver of a vehicle in the wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Hassan for drifting, causing a passenger to fall from the vehicle before being run over.”
ROP added that legal proceedings against the driver are underway. Brigadier Abdu Al Malik Al Mazrooei, the chief of South Sharqiyah Police Command, said that drifting stunts threaten the safety of road users and those responsible should be held legal accountable.
He stressed that ROP is tightening the control over roads by various means to monitor reckless traffic offenders and violators to ensure safety on the roads.
Al Mazrooei has called on parents to monitor the behaviour of their children to prevent them from reckless driving, stressing that the advice and guidance provided by parents to their children can promote positive behaviour among young people and contribute to the reduction in traffic accidents.
Maintain security
He also thanked the citizens and residents for their cooperation with the police in order to reduce accidents and maintain security and stability in the province.
Meanwhile, the 16-year-old boy, who fell from the car, has suffered a fracture in three ribs and in leg, but he is stable.
An official at ROP told the Times of Oman, “He is in Jalan Bani Bu Hassan Hospital and he is in a stable health condition.”
