The speed limit of some highways in Saudi Arabia will be increased to 140 kph from 120 kph within the next few weeks.

Preparations are in progress to implement the decision to increase the speed limit, Sabq online newspaper reported, quoting informed sources.

The designs of the signboards for the new speed limit have been completed, informed sources said.

They said the implementation of the decision is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks.

Speed limit will be increased to 140 kph on Riyadh-Taif, Riyadh-Eastern Province, Riyadh-Qassim and Makkah-Madinah expressways, according to preliminary estimates, according to a report on Saudi Gazette.

Meanwhile the authorities denied social media rumours that speed limits on highways have already been increased.

According to sources, the ministry will put up guiding and warning signboards showing speed limits.

They stressed that motorists should follow the current speed limits and instructions on the signboards to avoid being penalised for violations, the report added.
