Egyptian authorities at the Cairo International Airport have thwarted the smuggling of 203 antique coins dating back to Ancient Egypt, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine eras.

Hamdi Hammam, head of the Central Administration of Archaeological Units in Ports, said a committee of specialized archaeologists was formed to examine the seized coins which confirmed that they are subject to the Antiquities Protection Law No. 117 of 1983 and its amendments, and all legal measures will be taken in this regard.

Hana Al-Mashoor, Director General of the Archaeological Unit at Cairo Airport, said that the seized objects include 36 coins from the Greek age, 58 coins from the Roman era, a coin from the Byzantine time, and other 108 coins of different shapes and sizes.
