A UAE resident of Asian origin, who was arrested for possessing heroin worth Dh260,000 and trying to sell the contraband to an undercover police officer, has been handed down a life sentence by the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi.

The country's apex court has upheld the earlier ruling by lower courts to the convict for dealing with drugs and other psychotropic substances.

A public prosecution witness told the Federal Supreme Court that an undercover police officer had got in touch with the defendant and wanted to buy drugs from the latter in a bid to catch him red-handed.

During a meeting, the defendant tried to hand over the heroin worth Dh260,000 to the undercover police officer. He was arrested on the spot.

The accused owned up to his crime during interrogation.

Both the Criminal Court of First Instance and the Appeal Court found the man guilty of possessing and dealing with heroin.

Later, the defendant moved the UAE’s top court, which upheld the lower courts’ verdict.

The defendant will be deported to his homeland after serving his prison term.
