Muscat: The number of cases received by the public prosecution in 2022 increased by 14.5 percent compared to 2021 in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Public Prosecution said in it is annual report: “The number of misdemeanor cases last year amounted to 30,543 cases, an increase of 14.6 percent compared to 2021, and the number of defendants registered in cases during the past year reached 40,113, an increase of 15 percent compared to 2021, and the percentage of expatriates out of the total cases 42.3%.”

The completion rate of the Public Prosecution in the cases received during the past year reached 97%, as the number of cases referred to the courts reached 19,588 cases, and the number of cases filed reached 11,687 cases.

According to the statistics, the Governorate of Muscat recorded the highest number of cases, reaching 13,155 cases, at a rate of 40.8%, while the Governorate of Musandam recorded the lowest number of received cases, as it recorded 188 cases, at a rate of 0.6%.

Cases related to checks top crime in Oman

Check cases topped crimes during the year 2022 at a rate of 14.9%, His Excellency Nasr bin Khamis Al Sawai, Public Prosecutor stated.

He explained during the annual conference of the Public Prosecution, which reviews the indicators and statistics of the cases that the Public Prosecution dealt with during the past year: “The total sums collected for the public right in the past year amounted to OMR 12.418 million. And the total number of judgments issued last year reached 15,442, 90.2% of which were implemented.”

His Excellency explained that there are some cases that cannot be reconciled or waived, even if the owner of the case deals with it.

The Public Prosecution states that among its future plans is to study approving a mechanism to shorten the intervals between investigation sessions, and to further employ modern technologies.
