Bahrain - MPs yesterday approved an amendment to the 1977 Building Law despite being advised against it by the public utilities and environment affairs committee.

The amendment gives the Youth and Sports Minister power to issue regulations governing the technical requirements and design of sports facilities and fields.

It was already rejected by the Shura Council while the government had stated that existing laws serve the intended purpose of the amendment.

The amended law will now be sent back to the Shura Council.

Meanwhile, parliament rejected proposals on radioactive material, the environment and the use of renewable energy based on a comprehensive plan to be presented to the government.

“All these proposals were submitted in 2008 or 2009, which is around 11 years ago; a lot has happened in the environment field since then,” said Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain, adding that a comprehensive plan will be presented to parliament soon.

Meanwhile, four agreements were approved yesterday – an aviation agreement with Saudi Arabia, an agreement with the UAE regarding transporting passengers and merchandise over land, an agreement with the UAE over aviation services and an aviation agreement with Brunei.

They will be sent to the Shura Council for final approval.
