Total electricity production edged up 1% at the end of February to 2,897GWh (excluding used self-generation), it emerges from a National Energy and Mines Observatory report released Thursday.

Electricity purchases from Algeria covered more than 12% of local market needs in the first two months of 2023.

The national power utility company STEG still has the lion's share with 99% of production by late February. Natural gas-fired power generation grew 1% while electricity generation from renewables accounted for 2.1% of total production.

Actually, 166 MW of photovoltaic roofs were installed in the residential sector and 302 licenses were granted for an overall output of 68 MW in industrial and tertiary sectors and agricultural.

Peak demand rose 6% to 3,337 MW at the end of February against 3,147 MW at the end of February 2022.
