Suhar – The Environment Authority in North Batinah on Tuesday carried out a large-scale tree-planting campaign, sowing more than 1.2mn seeds of Samr and Sidr trees across several locations in the wilayat of Suhar. The initiative forms part of national efforts to plant ten million trees across the sultanate and enhance vegetation cover.
The campaign was implemented during the recent rainy period, allowing the seeds to benefit from improved soil moisture and favourable climatic conditions that increase the chances of germination and successful growth. Suitable sites were selected to maximise the impact of the initiative and support the long-term sustainability of planted trees.
Samr and Sidr are among Oman’s native tree species known for their resilience and ability to adapt to the country’s arid climate. These trees are valued for their high tolerance to drought and heat, while also playing an important ecological role in stabilising soil, reducing desertification and supporting biodiversity.
Launched in January 2020, the ten million trees initiative aims to increase vegetation cover, improve air quality, and address the loss of trees caused by development projects. It also seeks to combat desertification, stabilise soil erosion, and enhance ecosystem resilience against climate change and drought.
The Authority said the campaign is part of its broader environmental programmes aimed at restoring natural vegetation cover and strengthening ecological balance across the sultanate. Such initiatives also contribute to raising community awareness about the importance of protecting natural resources and preserving them for future generations.
In addition to enhancing green cover, the initiative supports wider environmental goals, including improving air quality and mitigating the impacts of climate change by expanding green spaces and increasing the capacity of ecosystems to absorb carbon.
The Authority continues to implement sustainable afforestation initiatives in cooperation with various government entities, community organisations and volunteers, making use of seasonal rainfall and favourable environmental conditions to ensure higher success rates for planting efforts.
