Light entertainment on satellite TV channels has been described as a way for people to reduce the stress they suffer from viewing footage of suffering and misery in various parts of the world.

Youssra, the renowned Egyptian superstar, says humourous programmes or dramas do not distract viewers from paying attention to any national or international issues. But instead, light entertainment is a valid way to "ease the pain of what we see in news broadcasts, allowing people to be happier, more creative and more productive."

Youssra, who is starring in a Showtime campaign promoting the benefits of paid-for digital satellite television, was addressing a press conference yesterday.

"I believe that people have to know how to enjoy life and be creative. Those who can't enjoy their life cannot create. Thus Arabic viewers need any kind of entertainment to exit from the daily grind of suffering and enjoy their time."

In the late 1970s, Youssra was the captivating Egyptian actress who won accolades for her roles in films such as Fata Tabhath Ann Alhob (A Girl Looking For Love), Ebtessama Waheda La Takfi (One Smile Is Not Enough) and Shabab Yarkoss Fawk Alnar (Youth Dancing On Fire).

The star said: "I'm hooked on all the latest Western and Arabic movies and as a professional entertainer I need to keep up-to-date with all that is happening in Hollywood."

In the advert she plays herself and, as she becomes absorbed in a movie on Showtime, she does not notice that her home is being burgled until the thief joins her on the couch and he begins to cry because he has also become totally immersed in the emotion of the film.

Peter Einstein, the President and Chief Executive of Showtime, said, "There is no bigger star than Youssra and I was delighted to learn that she has been a long-term Showtime subscriber. It is important to the integrity of the campaign that Youssra not only believes in the product but lives with it, too."
