Abu Dhabi - The occasion of victory in a historic war should encourage Bangladeshi expatriates to work towards the good of their country and its image internationally, the Bangladeshi Ambassador to the UAE said.

“This month symbolizes our independence after a nine-month war. It should remind us to contribute to our homeland, and live as law abiding citizens in the UAE. Respecting the local rules and regulations is part of our responsibility as we represent our nation,” Muhammad Imran told Gulf News in the capital today (Monday).

He was speaking on the advent of Bangladesh’s Victory Day, which is celebrated every year on December 16. The day saw Bangladesh gain independence from Pakistan in 1971.

“Victory Day is marked soon after the UAE National Day. As we celebrate our success, we also congratulate the UAE leadership on their achievements. This year, our happiness is compounded by Dubai’s win of the Expo 2020 bid, which will see the UAE reach newer heights,” he added.

Celebrations kicked off at the Embassy this morning with the hoisting of the flag in the presence of hundreds of community members. Diplomats and top officials then paid their respects to the father of the nation, Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, and the many martyrs who perished in the 1971 war.

There are currently between 700,000 to 800,000 Bangladeshi expatriates living and working in the UAE in sectors as diverse as education, construction and other professional occupations. Imran urged all of them to work hard and excel in their fields.

This year, a troupe of performers also visited the UAE ahead of Victory Day. Their visit coincided with UAE National Day celebrations, and a number of traditional song and dance performances were held until last week across the UAE.

Asked about the ongoing conflicts in Bangladesh, Imran said he hoped they would be solved amicably very soon and that the country would continue its democratic processes.
