AMMAN (Dow Jones)--Jordan's Ministry of Industry and Trade bought Tuesday 50,000 metric tons of wheat at $289.25 a ton from different origins for delivery in August, a senior ministry official said.

The purchased wheat was the result of a tender to buy 100,000 tons which closed Tuesday.

Jordan bought the wheat from Glencore C&F, the official told Dow Jones Newswires.

Six companies submitted offers to supply wheat but Glencore won the contract because its price was the closest, the official said.

Jordan consumes some 720,000 tons of wheat a year.
