TUNIS - President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said, on Friday, that the Tunisian Constitution celebrated today "undeniably carries hope and inspires other countries." It is the foundation of a democratic Tunisian republic, serving its people, he argued.

"It is with emotion that on behalf of the European Union I came here in this assembly to pay tribute to you," the President of the European Council said at the beginning of his speech at the ceremony held at the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) on the ratification of the Tunisian Constitution.

"Because, Europe, this neighbour continent that had experienced all tragedies, had witnessed throughout its history the slow emergence of democracy, is fully aware and values like no other the really historical milestone we are celebrating here now."

Herman Van Rompuy commended the inclusive dialogue that helped Tunisia achieve this result, paying tribute to the approach followed to keep on seeking compromise between all the components of the society.

"It is the only way to ensure a long term political and social project peacefully," he argued.

It is here at the NCA, that deputies "definitely showed that the path of violence hardly provides solutions and must be resolutely rejected," he added, while remembering "those who had lost their lives, who were assassinated in Tunisia in this quest for freedom and democracy."

Herman Van Rompuy also welcomed the adoption of the Tunisian constitution, which he called "resolutely modern, carrying universal values such as human rights and fundamental freedoms but also new rights such as environment protection." A new constitution, which, he added, guarantees to citizens equality in rights and duties.

"Thanks to the commitment of all Tunisians, freedom is on the march in Tunisia," he also said.

Rompuy added in conclusion: "as you are preparing for free, fair and inclusive elections, just remember that you could always rely on your partner and ally neighbour, the European Union.
