KUWAIT, Feb 22 (KUNA) --

1921 -- Several Kuwaiti personalities, headed by Sheikh Yousef bin Essa Al-Qenaie, present a memo to Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber proposing the establishment of a Shura (consultative) Council headed by the Amir to regulate citizens' affairs. The memo is approved and 12 people are chosen to form Kuwait's first Shura Council.

1938 -- First drilling operations begin in the Burqan oilfields, indicating large amounts of oil are present in this location.

1965 -- Greece inaugurates its first embassy in Kuwait.

1972 -- The first edition of the Kuwaiti daily newspaper "Al-Qabas" is issued with Jassem Al-Nisif as its first editor-in-chief.

1976 -- An Amiri Decree is issued establishing the Higher Institute for Theatrical Arts as a means to contribute to the country's advancements in the cultural field.

1981 -- An Amiri Decree is issued establishing a committee for eradicating illiteracy.

1981 -- An Amiri Decree is issued increasing funds allocated for boosting Kuwait's defense. The government withdraws KD 500 million from the state's general reserves for this.

1988 -- The Yachts Club is inaugurated with a marina spanning 120,000 square meters and a capacity of approximately 265 boats.

1988 -- Kuwait Sea Front Project is inaugurated across from Shaab stretching nine kilometers. The project includes the Kuwait Towers, Green Island and the Swimming Pools Complex.

1997 -- Municipal Council Chairman inaugurates the central slaughterhouse in South Dhahar area.

1998 -- Abdullah Al-Salem Center for preparing sports leaders is inaugurated.
