Speedtest.net, a web service that provides free analysis of internet access performance metrics, has published its fourth-quarter Speedtest Global Index report that identifies key data about internet performance in countries across the world. Statistics on South Africa's mobile operators and internet service providers are included in the report.


MTN once again ranked as the fastest mobile operator in South Africa with a Speed Score of 65.21. In second place is Vodacom with a Speed Score of 42.12.

Telkom is in third place with a score of 27.22 and Cell C placed fourth with a 22.0 Speed Score. A Speed Score is determined by measuring speed tests from devices with modern chipsets that measure a network’s full capabilities.

 

Consistency Score

In measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, MTN had the highest Consistency Score in South Africa during Q4 2021, with 89.1% of results showing at least a 5mbps minimum download speed and 1mbps minimum upload speed.


 

Latency

Calculating median latency for top mobile providers in South Africa during Q4 2021, Telkom had the lowest at 20ms and Cell C had the highest score of 31ms.

 


Device information

An analysis of performance on some of the fastest phones in South Africa demonstrated the iPhone 13 Pro Max showed the fastest median download speed during Q4 2021 with 97.59mbps.

 


Manufacturer information

The combined performance by major cell phone manufacturers were examined by Ookla and it found that devices from Apple had the fastest median download speed in South Africa during Q4 2021 at 37.98 Mbps.
