Shell Development Oman and the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL) signed three agreements to fund the training of around 70 Omani youths from across the sultanate on Saturday.

The agreements worth RO223,500 were signed at the Shell office in Mina al Fahal.

The first agreement comprises a six-month training programme for 30 high school graduates in AutoCAD computer software, to be conducted at the Arabian Training Centre.

Another initiative will see ten high school graduates undergo a cashier programme for seven months, with the third agreement allowing 30 nationals to take part in a seven-month automobile mechanic programme at the Technical and Administrative Training Institute.

Following training, the graduates will be placed in a number of companies who have agreed to employ them, according to officials present at the signing ceremony.

"These are jobs that have been created for them. Funding these programmes means providing students with an opportunity to empower themselves and participate in national prosperity. It goes without saying that it's important for Omani youths to have jobs but it's imperative that candidates are productive once they are on the job," said Mohamed al Harthy, CEO of OPAL.

John Blascos, Shell Country Chairman in Oman, said the agreements was part of the company's social responsibility efforts in creating job opportunities for Omanis. "We are confident about these 70 young Omanis who will be trained and will eventually be employed, to join the workforce and have great career prospects."
