AMMAN -- Few hundred autos damaged by the storm Sandy may enter the Jordanian market after they are fixed.
According to Nabil Rumman , president of the Jordan Free Zone Investors Association, traders import each year around 65,000 used cars, of which 6,500 are originally from the United States. Five hundred of the 6,500 US cars are tagged as flooded or salvaged, Rumman told The Jordan Times on Monday, noting that such cars are not necessarily in a very bad shape.
He said damages are assessed carefully by insurance companies and then the vehicles get repaired to make them ready for further use.
"Any car dealer who sells used cars should declare if the car underwent any kind of damage," said Rumman .
According to Rami Shafei, a car importer, demand for flooded cars is very low even when offered at tempting prices.
Shafei said the damages affect cars more in the long-term, as the computerised systems may breakdown.
Mousa Awamleh, another car importer, said the website 'car facts' can show a buyer the history of US-made cars.
Both dealers expressed their discomfort in importing or selling any used car that has been flooded or affected by a storm.
Ibrahim Taha says that he is against buying any kind of used cars especially the flooded ones.
"I ended up spending more time and money fixing them than driving on the road," he noted
However, Ahmad Jarrar doesn't mind buying a flooded car.
"I have heard that these cars are even in better shape than the ones traders sell in our market," Jarrar said.
