MUSCAT -- Oman Mobile Telecommunication Company (Oman Mobile) and Oman Airports Management Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a new mobile flight information service at Oman Mobile headquarters yesterday. The service was launched by Dr Amor bin Awadh al Rawas, Managing Director, Oman Mobile, and George Bellew, Chief Executive Officer, OAMC. The service, dubbed 'My Travelmate', is considered the first of its kind in the Sultanate to provide Oman Mobile customers with live flight information directly through SMS text messages, it was announced at a press conference.
The service will ultimately enable travellers to effectively plan for arrival and departure timings simply by sending an SMS with (flight number) to 90016 instead of calling the airport information counter for details. The user friendly service will provide subscribers with instant updates of flight schedule of the arrival and departure flights round the clock and will significantly save travellers a great deal of time. My Travelmate service is applicable to schedule passenger flights from/to Muscat International Airport. The time indicated in the messages are 4 hours after the flight and 12 hours before the arrival or departure of flights.
"Today is a significant milestone in advancement and expansion of services between Oman Mobile and OAMC in providing better services to travellers and our clients. The service is the start of continuous steps of services with our corporate partners and clients," said Al Rawas. Currently, Oman Mobile boasts of 1.5 million active customers and the advancement and expansion of the company has not been impacted by the number portability scheme from Oman Mobile since figures are very minimal. Oman Mobile also provides the best services and at better tariffs as compared to any other mobile services within the country and the region, he noted.
Bellew said the flight service will simplify the lives of busy travellers, save their time and allow them to use a common product of high tech. The flight information service features flight status, update and number search to search for a flight through SMS from the lists of arrival and departure flight numbers. To check the flight status, you receive a message of the current flight status (at the time of enquiry). To continuously receive a text message every time a flight update takes place until the flight arrives or departs, simply SMS U followed by flight number to 90016. However, service charges differ according to the kind of service. The charges for flight status costs 150 baisas, the rate for flight update is 300 baisas and the flight number search is 100 baisas.
