Muscat: The opening ceremony of the International Conference on Geology of Arabian Plate and Oman Mountains, organised by the Earth Sciences Department of the College of Science at SQU, was held yesterday under the patronage of Dr. Ali bin Saud al Bimani, the vice-chancellor of SQU.
The three-day conference will present the latest developments across a broad spectrum of earth sciences professions, including sedimentary and hard rock geology, base and precious metals industry, petroleum geology, ground water, geophysics, meteorites and environmental sciences.
The sessions discussed the latest research in the field of the geology of the Arabian plate and Omani mountains.
The conference aims to encourage researchers to study and understand the geology of the region in terms of geologic nature and economic components.
Dr. Ali bin Saud al-Bimani, SQU vice-chancellor, then opened the scientific posters exhibition at which a number of sponsoring companies as well as academicians and researchers from within and outside the Sultanate participated.
The exhibition included 42 posters. The participants will make seven field visits during the period January 10-12. In his speech at the opening ceremony of the conference, Dr. Saif bin Nasser al Bahry, dean of the College of Science, said that SQU and the College of Science has always been in the forefront of organising international forums, wherein experts from across the globe would gather to share the latest developments in their respective scientific fields.
Prof. Sobhi Nasser, head of the department of Earth Sciences and the chair of the conference organising committee, said that the department was proud to host the event.
The conference has brought together renowned experts in their respective fields of geosciences to address vital issues of research in earth sciences, which have become increasingly important today, given that the findings and exploration for oil and mineral deposits are key drivers of economic growth in Arabia and the world.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was a presentation by Prof. Ken Glennie from Aberdeen University, who was among the pioneers to undertake geological mapping of the Omani mountains way back in the early sixties.
In his presentation titled 'Oman's geology: Past and present', Prof. Glennie gave an outline of the general geology of the country.
As many as 280 participants from different countries are participating in the conference which covers around 200 paper presentations, 42 poster demonstrations and seven field trips.
For the past 25 years, the Department of Earth Sciences at SQU has been actively involved in advancing geological knowledge about the Arabian Peninsula in general and the Omani mountains in particular.
