MUSCAT: MasterCard Worldwide yesterday said that Oman Arab Bank (OAB) has successfully completed and received its certification for merchant acquiring.

This accreditation enables the bank to be among select Omani financial institutions that have begun to offer e-payment services to government and public entities in the Sultanate.

Oman Arab Bank will now be able to process MasterCard credit, debit and prepaid card transactions, which will allow customers to pay for fees and services at various ministries and immigration offices in Oman in addition to a wide variety of merchants locally and globally. This certification is in line with the vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to encourage the development of the IT and communications sector with a particular focus to further establish e-government services and transition to a digital society.

The announcement answers His Majesty's call to all government institutions to enhance their performance and to establish their services, by applying digital technology.

"Oman Arab Bank is delighted to collaborate with MasterCard and become an acquirer. We are confident that through this successful completion of the certification for merchant acquiring we will be able to better serve the needs of our merchants accepting MasterCard payment cards. We look forward to offering innovative tools, technology and services to our merchants," said Hatem Abdel Fattah, head (Electronic Banking) of OAB.

"We believe, our customers and merchants will benefit from innovative products and offerings from the OAB based on our certification from MasterCard."

"At MasterCard, we are focused on helping acquirers identify new business opportunities and developing business strategies to achieve it," said Safdar Khan, country manager, Qatar and Oman, MasterCard Worldwide.

"Together with Oman Arab Bank we are deeply committed to further establishing the payments market in Oman and look forward to working closely to create innovative payment solutions that benefit merchants and consumers alike," he added.

Oman Arab Bank was established in 1984, following the acquisition of Arab Bank's branches in the country, whereas MasterCard is a global payments and technology company. It operates the world's fastest payments processing network, connecting consumers, financial institutions, merchants, governments and businesses in more than 210 countries and territories.
