Nokia launched its E6 handset in Oman on Tuesday. The mobile phone giant also showcased its new N9 smartphone and anno-unced its business strategy for the Omani market.

Tom Farrell, general manager for Nokia Lower Gulf (Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain), said the company will launch ten new models in Oman over the next ten months. "The purpose of today's event is to underline our commitment and dedication to the Omani market by discussing our new strategy and introducing our latest products."

The company also announced the opening of its world class service centre in Muscat run by Mohsin Haider Darwish (MHD), the distributors of Nokia in Oman. "We are very grateful to our distributors (MHD and Belltel) who ensure that our customers are able to experience all that Nokia has to offer in the best way possible," Farrell said.

The E6 business smartphones are targeted at people who use smartphones for both work and recreation. "The touchscreen guarantees ease of use and offers faster navigation," Farrell said.

The N9, Nokia's latest smartphone launched in Singapore last month, works on 'Anna,' a new platform of the Symbian operating system. This provides fast access to common activities on a smartphone such as the use of apps, surfing social networking websites and switching between various features.

Farrell added that Nokia will work with local developers and entrepreneurs to offer an assortment of locally relevant applications in Oman. "Over 200 such applications are already available, and over 5mn people download them in the Gulf region every day."
