Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Friday Japan is negotiating a waiver from U.S. penalties on companies doing business with Iran, The Associated Press reported, as Tokyo tries to find other suppliers to offset a cut in Iranian oil imports.
About 9% of Japan's oil comes from Iran. The premier said Japan is seeking a waiver for its financial institutions that do business with the Iranian central bank as the U.S. imposes penalties to pressure Iran over its suspected nuclear weapons program. Noda said he shares concerns about Iran's nuclear program but backs a diplomatic solution.
