Muscat: The Malaysia-based International Centre of Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) and Amjaad Development, the corporate division of Amjaad Group, yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to impart training and education in the field of Islamic banking and finance through specialised professional courses tailored specifically to meet the needs of professionals involved in Islamic banking and finance and also for potential candidates seeking employment in this vibrant sector.

The agreement was signed by engineer Khalid bin Hilal Al Yahmadi, chairman of the Board of Directors of Amjaad Development and Daud Vicary Abdullah, president and CEO of INCEIF, the global university of Islamic Finance.

Speaking on the occasion, Daud Vicary Abdullah, said that INCEIF is an exclusive university on Islamic finance and that more than 2,000 people are enrolled for its courses. He said, "Out of 2000, more than 200 are from the Gulf Cooperation Council region and this reflects the growing interest of GCC people in equipping themselves of Islamic finance.-

While other governments in the GCC are investing in developing Islamic finance human capital, Oman too needs to look into this aspect to make a good beginning in the Islamic banking sector.

Amjaad's move is aimed at promoting human capital development for the Islamic finance industry, developing superior talents and best practice for the sector, supplying top researchers and educators for the sector, and offering internationally-recognised professional certification and executive programmes in Islamic finance education.

Observed engineer Khalid bin Hilal Al Yahmadi, "We would be soon starting short-term skills and competency-based courses trained by the faculty from INCEIF and there would also be executive programmes based on demands. These would be conducted in Muscat and would certainly help people well-equipped to get employed in Islamic banks and to meet the demand for trained human capital.

Daud Vicary Abdullah said that besides the short-term courses that will be imparted in Oman, INCEIF offers three academic programmes that can be done online or as a regular student based in Kuala Lumpur.

These programmes are chartered Islamic finance professional (CIFP), masters in Islamic finance (MIF), and PhD in Islamic finance. The flagship programme is the CIFP which is a professional qualification aimed for practitioners in the Islamic financial services industry.

The CIFP is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and is equivalent to a master's degree. With full-time study the programme can be completed in 18 months. The objective of all three programmes is to produce high calibre professionals for the global Islamic financial services industry.

Daud Vicary Abdullah is confident that this strategic collaboration will be the catalyst in laying the foundation in addressing the talent shortage of Islamic finance professionals and serve as 'building in the knowledge in-roads' to the growing interest in Islamic finance in Oman.

Daud Vicary Abdullah said that this agreement shall enable Amjaad Development and INCEIF, to provide state-of-the art training programmes in the field of Islamic finance for the Omani market. These programmes shall cover all aspects related to Islamic banking, theoretical and practical including but not limited to the legislations governing the Islamic banking, Islamic insurance (takaful), audit and supervision of Islamic finance and ethics of Islamic banking.

All trainees will receive accredited certificates issued by INCEIF upon the successful completion of the training programmes.

Vicary added that the joint cooperation between INCEIF and Amjaad Development shall continue to obtain approvals from the Ministry of Higher Education in the Sultanate for the academic accreditation of the Masters in Islamic Finance (MIF) and PhD programmes offered by INCEIF.

This accreditation shall open doors for Omani students to join INCEIF for MIF & PhD degrees in Islamic banking and finance. Once accredited by MOHE Oman, INCEIF will also evaluate the possibility of delivering these programmes through institutes of higher education in Oman.

Since its first convocation in 2009, more than 200 students have graduated from INCEIF. The university has attracted partnerships with academic institutions and industry practitioners from all over the world, eager to tap into its pool of Islamic finance experts.
