MUSCAT -- MB Holding yesterday announced its continued support for the Outward Bound Oman/ Tahaddi initiative, a major project aimed at using the outdoor environment to unlock the human potential of young people in the Sultanate of Oman.
With logistical support provided by its subsidiary Petrogas, in January 2011 eight motivated and inspirational young people will undertake a challenging 100 km journey through the Rub al Khali, the world's largest sand desert. Established in 1941, Outward Bound is the global leader in experiential education. There are schools in over 30 countries around the world, and over 200,000 young people attend an Outward Bound course each year. Launched in May 2009, Outward Bound Oman is the first and only Outward Bound operation in the Arab world, reflecting the importance His Majesty's government places on investing in the Sultanate's human resources.
There are four key aims of the January journey; to celebrate the 40th year of the Renaissance, to show that Omani youth is capable of rising to the challenge, and doing positive things, to celebrate Oman's long standing relationship with the United Kingdom, and to support His Majesty's recognition of the contribution and potential of women in Oman society.
The eight young girls who are undertaking the challenge are all outstanding role models who demonstrate the potential to lead others in the future. Four girls from Oman, Ghada al Siyabi, Wafaa al Sumri, Rajaa al Maqbali and Intesar al Tobi will be joined by four girls from the United Kingdom, Claire Howes, Laura Watson, Alison Davies and Shannon Edwards. Their progress each day can be followed on the website www.connectingcultures.co.uk.
The co-patrons of the journey are Abdul Aziz al Hinai, Oman's Ambassador in London, and Dr Noel Guckian, British Ambassador in Oman.
In a joint statement, the patrons stated that "The eight adventurous young people undertaking this challenging journey through the Rub al Khali will have to rely on outstanding teamwork, clear communication, trust, tenacity and a shared vision, all qualities that underpin the long standing relationship between Oman and the United Kingdom. We wish them well on what will be an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives."
The corporate partners for the journey are MB Holding, who also supported the first challenge in January 2010, which saw eight boys undertaking a similar challenge. Logistical support is provided by Petrogas LLC the operator for Block 7 where the journey will take place, and a subsidiary of MB Holding Company.
Working in partnership with the Ministry of Education, and established by founding partners SR Denton, Shell and the Suhail Bahwan Group, the Outward Bound Oman/Tahaddi project has been set up to use the desert, mountains and seas of Oman to develop key life skills through challenging outdoor journeys which take young people outside of classrooms and into a unique learning environment.
