Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has surprised many by naming magician P.C. Sorcar (Jr) in its first list of candidates to contest the general election due by May.

Sorcar’s closeness to the BJP was first witnessed during the rally of BJP’s prime minister nominee Narendra Modi on February 5, where he stated that he went to the rally not as a BJP supporter but as an observer to see what Modi as a probable PM was offering to the voters.

His candidature has astonished many since he was known for his proximity with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the early ’90s. Later due to personal fallout, he switched his allegiance towards the Left parties and was seen in rallies during the aftermath of Nandigram incident that killed 11 people due to police firing.

Sorcar a doctorate is psychology is a great charmer and is considered one of the greatest magicians in the world. He will contest from Barasat constituency, in the outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal.

Speaking to reporters, Sorcar said he is confident of converting his popularity as magician into votes.

“I was waiting for a person like Narendra Modi to come into politics. I will like to vanish poverty and illiteracy from the country if elected,” he added.

However, Trinamool Congress leadership had described his candidature as proof of closeness between the Left parties and BJP in the state.

BJP has also nominated actor George Baker — catholic by religious belief — as its candidate for the Howrah constituency.

“I will surely win from Howrah. BJP has a huge political base in the area and its time to show that BJP is not a communal party as it had been portrayed by the different political parties just for political gains,” said George.
