DUBAI, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Iran has found significant shale oil reserves in the country's western Lorestan province, a research and exploration official at the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) was quoted as saying on Sunday.

"The results of a research project into shale oil in Lorestan clearly indicate the occurrence of two important reserves ... with acceptable breadth and volume," NIOC's Mahmoud Hajian told the oil ministry's news website SHANA.

"The quality of the oil that can be obtained is estimated to be very good," Hajian said, without giving the size of the reserves found in an area called Ghali Koh.
