BEIRUT: Electricite du Liban (EDL) announced on Monday that it has started a nationwide campaign to crack down on electricity theft and illegal connection on power cables. It added that in the month of September alone hundreds of fines were filed on violators all over Lebanon. According to the company, 478 cases were cracked in Beirut and its suburbs, 151 in Mount Lebanon, 197 in the north, 276 in the south and 56 in the Bekaa Valley. EDL urged citizens to facilitate the work of their technical and inspections teams and reminded them that any attempt to block their work will prompt the management to apply severe penalties on the violators. EDL warned that it will not hesitate to cut off power supply on any citizen who illegally connects to the electricity cables. “The violators will be prosecuted by the authorities and referred to the judiciary so that they can be tried,” EDL said in a statement. It called on all subscribers to pay outstanding dues or risk having their electricity cut off. – The Daily Star
