Some 235,000 tons of copper were produced over the past Iranian year, managing director of National Iranian Copper Industries Company (NICICO) announced on Saturday.

Ardeshir Sa'ad Mohammadi said NICICO plans to produce 700,000 tons of copper, IRNA reported.

"In order to achieve the target, NICICO plans to set up two plants for the production of copper concentrate by the end of the current Iranian year (started March 21)," he said.

Sa'ad Mohammadi said the implementation of the plan began last year and the plants are expected to come on stream by the end of the current year.

He added that NICICO is seriously updating the technology to explore copper mines and produce copper.

Total amount of processed copper ore amounted to 124 million tons last year, he said, it will increase to 200 million tons this year, which was named as the 'Year of National Production, Supporting Iranian Capital and Labor' by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Referring to the high quality of Iranian copper, he said this product is sold in international markets at a price higher than the average.

Sa'ad Mohammadi said that NICICO seeks to reach higher levels in terms of revenues from national industries and to rank fifth in the Middle East with respect to copper industries in the next four years.

Steel Production
The Islamic Republic of Iran is considered as the biggest producer of raw steel in the Middle East and Africa, Ministry of Industries, Mines and Trade announced on Saturday.

According to the latest report released by the World Steel Association (WSA), the country has exported over 3.626 million tons of raw steel in the first quarter of 2012.

The report added that the figure indicated a 6.8-percent rise compared to the corresponding period last year.

Iran exported 1.163 million tons of raw steel in March 2012, which shows 7.7 percent rise compared to the same period last year.

"Iran enjoys the highest production rate of raw steel compared to the main steel producers in the world including China, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Japan and UK in the first quarter of 2012," according to WSA.

Steel Export
Also a report released by Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) said steel exports witnessed a 62-percent growth during the past year, compared to the previous year.

The report added that last year's steel exports were worth $530 million, while the value of exported steel amounted to $326 million in the preceding year, indicating a 62-percent growth.

Iran's main steel mills are located in Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces.

Major raw steel producers of Iran include the Mobarakeh Steel Mill, with approximately 47 percent of the market share, Khuzestan Steel Company with about 23 percent, Isfahan Foundry with about 20 percent, and Iran National Steel Industries Group with approximately 10 percent of the market share.

Iran is among the 15 major mineral-rich countries exporting industrial and mineral products to 159 countries, including Iraq, China, the United Arab Emirates, India and Afghanistan.
