Some of the world’s leading experts in gemstones and jewellery will gather in Bahrain later this year.

The country is hosting the annual meeting of the World Jewellery Confederation, also known as Cibjo, from November 18 to 20.

Members of the international jewellery confederation, which consists of national trade organisations, will come together at the Four Seasons Hotel, Bahrain Bay.

The three-day conference will include sessions of Cibjo’s various committees, which will debate amendments to its Blue Books – the federation’s definitive directories of international industry standards for diamonds, coloured stones, pearls, gem labs and precious metals.

It will be preceded by pre-congress meetings on November 16 and 17, as well as the World Pearl Forum – which is scheduled for November 14 and 15.

“Cibjo congresses serve as the official gathering place for the World Jewellery Confederation’s Assembly of Delegates and are also the venue for the annual meetings of its sectoral commissions,” says the official website of the 2019 congress.

“This is the place where amendments can be introduced to the organisation’s definitive directories of international industry standards for diamonds, coloured stones, pearls, gem labs, precious metals, coral and responsible sourcing, known as the Blue Books.

“The congress is also where the programme of World Jewellery Confederation Education Foundation, relating to responsible and sustainable activities in the industry, and Cibjo’s ongoing co-operation with the UN and its development programme is reported upon.”

The congress is being hosted by the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones, otherwise known as Danat, which is the country’s national authority on standards, scientific knowledge and education in the sector.

“It is good that Bahrain is holding such a world event,” said Bahrain Jewellery Association treasurer and Al Sarraj Jewellery owner Mohamed Malim.

“The Cibjo congress 2019 will market Bahrain at the international level.

“The delegates from all around the world, especially Western countries, will learn more about Bahrain and its pearling tradition.

“And the timing of the congress cannot be better than November, as it comes before Jewellery Arabia.”

Cibjo’s chief mission is to protect consumer confidence in the industry and it is the sole jewellery industry organisation to have special consultative status with the United Nation’s Economic and Social Council.

The Italy-based organisation is also a member of the UN Global Compact and it aims to encourage harmonisation, promote international co-operation in the jewellery industry and consider issues concerning the trade worldwide.

Organisers say the Bahrain congress will be a carbon neutral event, with participants requested to complete a carbon footprint form confirming the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of their attendance.
