The Bahrain Accountants Association yesterday underlined the need for greater awareness on corporate governance among companies in the Kingdom.
Bahrain was on the threshold of introducing a corporate governance code for the Kingdom from January next year.
The association is organising a conference on "The role of Corporate Governance in Enhancing Organisational Growth and Sustainability" under the patronage of Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro next month.
The event to be addressed by corporate governance experts drawn from across the world will be held at the Crowne Plaza hotel from November 1 to 4.
"Bahrain and the Central Bank of Bahrain have been pioneering corporate governance code and ethics in the entire Middle East. The Bahrain model is relevant to the entire region," Chairman of the organising committee and Chief Executive of Origin Consulting Group, Ahmed M. Al Banna told DT yesterday.
"We are heading in a good direction, but we need a greater awareness among companies on the relevance of corporate governance practices."
"The event is not only in tune with the current global situation but will also pave the way for ensuring proper understanding of the new codes coming into force in 2011."
The coming together of renowned speakers and decision-makers from Bahrain, the GCC and Asia Pacific will go a long way in formulating Ahmed Al Banna long-term plans.
