Bahraini authorities have completed the work on the Riffa Avenue project aimed at easing the traffic coming from the Clock Roundabout, turning east on Muharraq Avenue and heading east on Riffa Avenue, said a report.

This is in line with the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, to develop prompt solutions to increase the flow of traffic throughout Bahrain’s road network, reported BNA.

The project will improve the vehicle movement across the Southern Governorate, and reduce traffic jams at the Clock Roundabout, stated the report, citing a senior minister.

"The project is within the second roads optimisation package launched in response to HRH Prince the Crown Prince’s directives to develop urgent solutions to ease congestion at major intersections throughout the kingdom," explained Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf.

The project included adding a lane to allow turning left from Riffa Avenue to Muharraq Avenue, thus creating two lanes to turn left and providing a commuter island for vehicles heading left and east on Riffa Avenue, he added.

Khalaf pointed out that new traffic signals and lights were installed as part of the project besides painting new road markings, a key element to ensure road safety.

According to him, with the completion of this project, the waiting lines on Riffa Avenue will get greatly reduced by about 45 per cent and the avenue’s capacity will be up 12 per cent.

The minister pointed out that the project would contribute to easing traffic congestion on Riffa Avenue for those heading to Muharraq Avenue, particularly during peak times.

"It will also serve citizens coming from the Clock Roundabout and heading to Riffa, as it will ensure easy access to commercial outlets and residential areas," he added.
