On the occasion of the meeting held at the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) Secretariat-General in Rabat, a team of Maghreb professionals agreed to create a Maghreb centre for rationalizing the use of irrigation water in the agricultural sector.

According to MAP (Moroccan News Agency), in a communiqué released by the Arab Maghreb Union Secretariat-General, professionals have recently started to prepare a comprehensive technical file on the situation of the irrigation sector in AMU's member states.

They stressed the adoption of modern technologies as well as the importance of traditional heritage in the preservation of the irrigation water sector.

During the meeting, the team decided to hold in 2011, a scientific conference on techniques and mechanisms of irrigated water saving in cooperation with technical partners such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (SSO) and specialized European institutes.

This meeting is part of the implementation of the recommendations of the 15th session of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) Ministerial Council on food security which was held in October 2009 in Marrakech. The meeting focused on ways to improve water management in agriculture and to strengthen the Maghribi cooperation in the sector.
