Abu Dhabi, Nov 28th, 2012 (WAM) -- In a joint initiative by Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee (TDC), the breadth of innovation in Abu Dhabi was showcased to the world at the Global Federation of Competitiveness Council (GFCC) conference 2012.

The Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils conference is being held in the United Arab Emirates for the first time which represents a significant achievement for industry and trade in Abu Dhabi, the UAE and the wider region.

Commenting on the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development?s participation in the event, Mohammed Omar Abdullah, Undersecretary, Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, stated: "As part of the strategic Abu Dhabi Economic Vision to create sustained economic development and become a knowledge economy by 2030, the UAE?s Government plays an important role of in building solid foundations in innovation and by making important contributions in developing the market value of the business sector."He went on to say: "Building knowledge economies mean building capability in our research and development functions, particularly in the manufacturing sector and we are proud that we are participating through the Competitiveness Office of Abu Dhabi."Commenting on TDC?s participation at the event, Ahmed al Calily said; "Abu Dhabi is innovating and our innovation support program Takamul is a clear demonstration of this. Since its launch, the program has enjoyed success with 13 international patents filed in its pilot year, is on track to add a further 20 patents in 2012, and with 15 already in the pipeline, the program is poised to grow even more in 2013. Our participation in this respected global platform demonstrates our commitment to supporting and celebrating the successes of our local innovators."As part of its mandate to support the development of science & technology and innovation in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee is helping build a solid innovation base in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and started Takamul program in 2012, to provide legal and financial support to local inventors in addition to institutions in Abu Dhabi for international patent filing.

The Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils conference takes place in Dubai on 27th and 28th November and in Abu Dhabi on 29th November 2012.
