A total of 48 Egyptian and international companies have submitted bids for the wastewater treatment plant project at Abu Rawash, Giza - Egypt, a senior official told Zawya.

"The deadline for submitting all pre-qualification documents and other requirements is set for March 4, 2013 with the bid winner expected to be announced by end of 2013. The project execution and operation period is expected to range between three to four years," said Atter Hannoura, director of the central unit for public private partnership (PPP) at the Egyptian ministry of finance.

"The total project cost is expected to range between EGP 5 to 5.5 billion, and includes designing, financing and increasing the capacity of the plant from 1.2 million cubic meters per day to 1.6 million cubic meters per day. The project also involves constructing an advanced secondary system wastewater treatment plant at Abu Rawash; in addition to operating and maintaining the entire plant, at a capacity of 1.6 million cubic meters per day," said Hannoura.

"The plant shall seek to produce approximately 584 million cubic meters per year of treated water, which constitutes around 1% of Egypt's share of the Nile's water and would be utilized for agricultural purposes. The plant will be the largest in Egypt to produce water for irrigation and the second largest plant after El Gabal El Asfar treatment plant," he added.

The project falls under the ministry of drinking water and wastewater utilities and shall be supervised by the central unit for public private partnership. The duration of the operations is for a period of 17 years, and the plant will be located in Abu Rawash, Giza. Calls for pre-qualification were made last January 16, 2013. The financial project consultant is KPMG; technical consultant is Ch2MHill and legal advisor is Trowers & Hamlins.
