MORE than 20,000 Bahrainis will be found employment every year, pledged a top minister.
The jobs would be provided under the Economic Recovery Plan announced by the Cabinet in November, said Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan.
He was speaking as he honoured 27 distinguished workers and pioneers during a downsized ceremony at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention and Spa.
Present were Bahrain Chamber chairman Samir Nass, representatives of federations and trade unions and officials.
The honourees were awarded in appreciation of their merit and excellence in various sectors.
The original honouring ceremony, held annually in December under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, has been suspended this year due to health restrictions.
It means that it has not been held for two consecutive years – 2020 and 2021.
“His Majesty King Hamad has asked that I salute the national labour force that was, and still remains, the main dynamo of comprehensive development in the country,” said Mr Humaidan.
He said that the government has managed to combat the impact of Covid-19 on various aspects of life.
“Challenges have been transformed into opportunities and what we have with us now is a strong labour market.
“The government will step in to support wages and provide financial assistance if things go bad.”
The minister also pointed out that the government is keen to raise the level of economic growth and diversify sources of national income and invest this in creating more promising opportunities for citizens by setting plans and innovating policies that stimulate the sustainability of labour market growth.
“This involves launching a number of initiatives directed at supporting establishments and increasing the pace of integrating job-seekers into private sector establishments.
“The Cabinet has launched an economic recovery plan that set priorities for advancement to the next stage, foremost of which is creating promising job opportunities and making citizens the first choice in the labour market, targeting the employment of 20,000 Bahrainis and training of 10,000 Bahrainis annually, until the year 2024.”
“This is just the minimum and I am confident the 20,000 figure will be exceeded no matter what.”
Mr Humaidan said the ambitious plan came after Bahrain succeeded in reducing layoffs during the difficult period.
He added that the government successfully implemented the National Programme for Employment in its second edition, which was able to achieve set goals to employ more than 25,000 Bahrainis during the year 2021 in the private sector.
The minister then presented certificates of appreciation and commemorative shields to distinguished companies, institutions and entrepreneurs, as well as distinguished workers from various sectors.
The list of honourees included entrepreneurs, managers, small projects category, outstanding workers, even from unregulated sectors, the oil and gas sector, the manufacturing sector, the transport and storage sector, workers from the banking, finance and insurance sector, the contracting sector, the hospitality and restaurant sector, the trade sector, the social and other activities sector, as well as workers in professions that nationals have begun excelling in, as well as workers from dangerous professions.
