MANAMA: Bahraini health officials yesterday warned members of the public not to buy a Saudi-manufactured baby shampoo after reports that it was contaminated with a deadly germ that could be fatal for babies.

The Ministry of Health issued a warning urging the public to stop using Rolana baby shampoo fearing it may be contaminated with Serratia Mercescens germ.

It said if used the shampoo could lead to skin, eye and urinary tract infections, which could be fatal. Some Bahraini families often travel to Saudi Arabia during the weekends to buy household items where they are relatively cheap. The ministry advised parents who purchased the shampoo not to use it until laboratory tests are carried out to ascertain whether the product is tainted.

Supermarkets and corner shops in the country have also been instructed by the ministry to remove the products from their shelves. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority issued the initial health warning after a baby died and 13 others fell ill allegedly after using the shampoo.
