Dubai A Dubai Police team is in Afghanistan to try and recover 18 vehicles stolen and smuggled out of the UAE.

The batch is part of 56 vehicles stolen from Dubai and another emirate over the period of a year. The vehicles were stolen by a four-member gang from storage areas at Al Aweer Car Market and another emirate.

On Wednesday, the team recovered five new cars, including a Land Cruiser and Prado, smuggled out of the UAE in three containers supposed to be carrying spare parts. The estimated value of the cars is over Dh1 million, Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said.

The team, which has all the documents proving that the cars are owned by UAE residents, is tasked with retrieving the vehicles and returning them to their owners in the UAE.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, and Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police, issued instructions mandating the police to recover the stolen vehicles.

The recovery brings the number of cars retrieved so far to 12 — of the 56 stolen by the gang. Earlier, police had foiled at attempt to smuggle out five cars.

Police are working to recover seven more containers containing 14 cars valued at more than Dh4 million, Brig Al Mansouri said.

“With the arrival of the 14 cars, we would be retrieving the last batch of cars stolen from Dubai and some of the cars stolen from another emirate since the gang started its operations in April 2011,” he said.
