ROME (Dow Jones)--Italy's energy giant Eni SpA (E) has been in constant contact with Libyan rebels and the country's National Transitional Council since April and is working to help them face the emergency needs and ensure that all its plants in Libya can be reopened, chief executive officer Paolo Scaroni told Il Corriere della Sera in an interview Wednesday.
Scaroni said the transition period in the country is complicated but added he is positive about the future of Eni in Libya, and that all the existing contracts will be guaranteed.
Eni's CEO said he doesn't see any problems with gas supply to Italy for next winter, on condition that the flow from its other sources of gas, Algeria and Russia, is not interrupted.
At the start of Libya's civil war in mid-February, Eni had the largest operations in North Africa of any foreign energy company, with hydrocarbon output of about 280,000 barrels a day of oil equivalent. Its current Libyan production is around 50,000 BOE a day, used for the local population.
